ABOUT SIGMA NU
Sigma Nu was founded in 1869 during the Reconstruction era by three cadets at the Virginia Military Institute. These young men were disgusted by the hazing and harassment that younger students faced from upperclassmen. After Bible study at the superintendent's home, they pledged to create a brotherhood grounded in honor and respect.
Though starting small with just three members, Sigma Nu grew rapidly. Today it has over 227,000 lifetime members and 278 chapters in the U.S. and Canada. Many prominent Sigma Nu alumni have excelled in diverse fields like entertainment, sports, business and politics. These include Bob Barker, Adam Duritz, Eli Manning, Don Tyson and Harrison Ford.
Philanthropy is a core part of Sigma Nu's mission. In 2004, they launched the Helping Hand Initiative to support causes like the Bear Bryant Awards, Habitat for Humanity and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Through service, members develop leadership, communication and project management skills while bettering their communities.
Sigma Nu's badge reflects its founding principles of love, truth and honor. Its design resembles a French medal symbolizing the code of honor that has guided the fraternity since its inception. Sigma Nu stands apart through its enduring commitment to brotherhood, duty and respect for all.
